What is autism?
Autism is a lifelong developmental disability which affects how people communicate and interact with the world around them. More than one in 100 people are on the autism spectrum, and around 700,000 adults and children in the UK have the condition.
Autistic people may act in a different way from other people
Some of the reasons that Autistic people may find hard in the day to day life;
- find it hard to communicate and interact with other people
- find it hard to understand how other people think or feel
- find things like bright lights or loud noises overwhelming, stressful or uncomfortable
- get anxious or upset about unfamiliar situations and social events
- take longer to understand information
- do or think the same things over and over
Autism is not an illness
You do not necessarily have a disease or illness if you are autistic. It indicates that your brain functions differently from other people’s.
It comes naturally to you. It’s possible that you won’t notice signs of autism until you’re older or very young.
You will always be autistic if you are autistic.
There is neither a “cure” for autism nor any medical treatment for it. However, some individuals require assistance with particular tasks.
People with autism can lead full lives
You can still live a happy life despite being autistic.
Like everyone else, autistic people excel in some areas and struggle in others.
Being autistic does not mean that you will never be able to get a job, have a relationship, or make friends. However, you might need additional assistance with these issues.
Every person with autism is unique.
Autism is a spectrum. This indicates that every person with autism is unique.
Some autistic individuals require little or no assistance. Others might require daily assistance from a parent or caregiver.
Some people use other names for autism
There are other names for autism used by some people, such as:
- autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is the medical name for autism
- Asperger’s (or Asperger syndrome) is used by some people to describe autistic people with average or above-average intelligence
The cause of autism is unknown
No one knows what causes autism or if it has a cause.
It can have an impact on family members. Therefore, parents may occasionally pass it on to their children.
Any intelligence level is acceptable among autistic people
Some autistic people are intelligent above or below average.
Some people who are autistic have a learning disability. As a result, they may have difficulty taking care of themselves and require assistance with daily activities.
Autistic people may have other conditions
Autistic people often have other conditions, such as:
- attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- dyslexia
- anxiety
- depression
- epilepsy
